Your Daily Dental Care Regimen

Dentists tell their patients all the time that a good oral or dental hygiene habit is important in keeping healthy gums and teeth and that a visit to the dentist every 6 months will most definitely help the patients keep their teeth and gums in tiptop condition. Brushing your teeth routinely, along with flossing are good ways to start a healthy daily oral care routine.

  • Start your day by rinsing your mouth with fresh water. This is to get rid of that leftover taste post-sleep. You can also briefly check your teeth to look for stains or visible cavities which may require a dental consultation. Additionally, you should inspect your tongue, lips and gums for any indications of spots or sores that your dentist should check or examine.

  • After the initial checking of your teeth and gums, you can apply a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to your toothbrush, rubbing it in circular motion over each tooth and along the gum line, going from top to bottom teeth. Rinse your mouth with clear water and then check your teeth in the mirror to make sure that you didn’t miss any spot or that there isn’t any plaque between teeth. If necessary, you can use a tiny dental brush to reach the farthest teeth to make sure they get the cleaning they need.

  • After brushing, you can do a final rinse by using a mouthwash and swishing it for about a minute, after which you can rinse again with clear water to remove the aftertaste. At this point, you are ready to start your full day.

  • If possible, make it a point to brush your teeth after every meal. But if this is not possible, rinsing your mouth with clear water to loosen the food debris lodged between teeth or under the gum line will be enough. If you can, have floss handy for a quick run-through after eating.

  • At the end of the day, you can repeat the morning brushing ritual, spending two minutes to complete the brushing process to get the tips and both surfaces of each tooth. Flossing to remove the hidden food particles which were not reached by brushing, should be done to prevent buildup of plaque. Rinse well with water. Flossing will help remove any debris or food particle in between the teeth. You can finish the routine by rinsing with a mouthwash followed by last rinse with clear water.

  • As an additional dental health measure, avoid eating sugary foods or chewing on hard items such as ice, to prevent cracking of the teeth or causing formation of cavities in the teeth.

In general, your teeth should be cared for like the rest of your body. Establishing a routine will make it easier to maintain a healthy oral care and dental hygiene habit, thus ensuring healthy teeth and gums throughout your life. By following a dental hygiene routine daily, you are guaranteed to get good results for your mouth, keeping your teeth in tiptop and healthy condition.
