What are Dental Braces?

Dental brace is a dental appliance that is wrapped all the way around the teeth. It has brackets the run along a wire affixed to the teeth. The brackets and wire press against the teeth to move them slightly in order to allow the teeth to achieve correct position and formation.

In the past, dental braces are wrapped all the way around the tooth. However, in today’s generation, bonded brackets are used which are a lot smaller. Another type of dental brace usually attached to the teeth is the clear brace which is addressing the appearance or visual concern more than anything else. Dental braces are worn on the average from 12 to 20 months.

People who wear dental braces can expect to achieve the following results:

  • Crooked teeth are corrected, allowing proper alignment of teeth

  • Bad bites are addressed and corrected

Teeth Overcrowding

Overcrowding of teeth, if not addressed can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. It’s harder to brush and floss teeth that are spaced too closely to each other. With dental braces, spacers are used in between the teeth to space out the teeth properly.

Bad Bites

Having chewing or bite problems can cause the teeth to wear out quickly, which will eventually lead to tooth loss. Biting problems can also tire out jaw muscles and cause pain while eating.

Self-Confidence

The resulting aligned and properly positioned teeth, after months of wearing dental braces will greatly improve and boost self-confidence. You will no longer feel embarrassed smiling because there are no crooked or misaligned teeth anymore. For many people, a beautiful smile is the best and worthy benefit of dental braces.

Dental braces can be critical to your oral health. So if you notice any deformation or defects on the alignment of your teeth, it is important that you consult with your dentist so you can discuss the option of wearing braces to correct the problem.
