The Importance of Taking Good Care of Your Gums

How many of us even bother about checking the health of our gums?

This is a question that is likely to make many people wonder as well. People are more conscious about their teeth but not quite about their gums. And most people think or assume that gums are healthy that’s why they focus on other pressing matters. Gum health takes the sideline.

But people should know that the health of your gums can have an effect on your physical health. Your gums cover the bones of your teeth, providing a tight seal around the teeth to provide a barrier to bacteria. With this role, it is therefore important to take good care of your gums so that the teeth are provided with the needed protection.

Realizing the importance of the role played by your gums, you should make sure that your gums are taken care of properly.

Good Oral Health Practices

Remember to take care of your gums by following good oral health practices such as:

  • Brushing after meals

  • Daily flossing to remove food particles between and around your teeth

  • Use antibacterial mouthwash or toothpaste to help reduce bacteria that can cause gingivitis

  • Cut back on sugar because oral plaque can form if sugar and bacteria combines. Plaque can lead to bleeding gums, tooth decay and cavities

  • Drink plenty of water. You flush bacteria off your teeth and mouth with water so drink plenty so you reduce the risk of gum disease and cavities

  • Avoid tobacco or cigarettes because it also affects your gums

  • Prevent the formation of plaque on tooth surfaces

  • Eat lean beef because it is high in zinc which has immunity-boosting powers that can fight gum disease.

  • Eat spinach for gums because it has beta-carotene that converts to vitamin A – a powerful antioxidant and immunity booster which is good for your gums.

  • Visit your dentist regularly, twice a year.

Benefits of Having Healthy Gums

Having healthy gums not only protect your teeth. There are other benefits derived from keeping your gums healthy. They include:

  • No bad breath. You can boost your confidence if you don’t have bad breath.

  • Less risk of inflammation and infection in the body

  • Less risk of blockages of blood vessels and stroke.

  • No gingivitis. By keeping your gum healthy, no plaque will form in your mouth which can cause gingivitis.

  • No periodontal disease. Without periodontal disease, there is no risk of developing respiratory infection or cardiovascular disease.

  • Better memory. Adults with gingivitis perform worse on memory tests and other cognitive skills.

Regardless of a person’s age, gum health is an important issue. Once the gum’s health has deteriorated it can be extremely difficult to reverse the damage. Hence, it is really important that you take care of your gums.
